Lifeknot: Your Best Bet for Finding Your Perfect Partner

Meet new people in any of the more than 1,300 activities now listed at Lifeknot

CAMBRIDGE, MA, May 20, 2000 - What interests and passions would one hope to share with their perfect partner? Hiking, sushi, snowboarding and Scrabble? Museums, movies and mountain biking? lifeknot, a free social networking web site that has just surpassed 1,300 member-suggested activities, makes the task of finding friends with similar interests easy.

When lifeknot first launched, the site listed just over 200 fitness and outdoor activities. Members have since suggested over 1,100 activities in categories as diverse as activism, food, languages and collecting. The breadth of activities listed at lifeknot is in stark contrast to what was a trend of niche sites that focus only on, say, dog lovers or democrats.

lifeknot compares members' activity interests, as well as favorite bands, books, movies and TV shows, to show members those with whom they share the most in common. "The ability to compare such a broad range of interests is the best bet for finding your perfect partner," says Matt Muro, founder of lifeknot. "The ability to meet someone that shares your love of camping, kayaking, scuba diving and street fairs all on one web site simplifies the search for friends with whom you'll have a rich relationship."

The emphasis on shared activities lessens the vulnerability people feel when posting a profile online. It also allows people to show a side of themselves that isn't conveyed through traditional personality profiles alone. As a result, people feel more comfortable contacting each other. Shared interests serve as an icebreaker, resulting in a more comfortable, natural way to meet new friends and dates.

In Muro's own words, "We really want people to just have fun sharing their interests. If love follows we're happy to have helped."

Lifeknot Offers Tips for a Stress-Free Valentine’s Day

Live your life and let love follow, says lifeknot

CAMBRIDGE, MA, February 12, 2007 – Valentine's Day doesn't have to be stressful for those looking for love. In fact, finding a sweetheart would never be stressful if lifeknot had its way. The social-networking website encourages people to live their lives and let love follow.

Through myriad activities suggested by members, people can find others who share interests and passions as diverse as short films, sushi, Scrabble, surfing, and stargazing. lifeknot currently lists over 1,200 activities across 45 categories. Members can select a variety of activities during a search, allowing them to find, say, fellow hiking enthusiasts who also like Indian food, photography, and Frisbee. Searching for people with common interests is lifeknot’s suggestion for taking the stress out of finding a Valentine. Finding a significant other that shares many similar interests may ensure that love lasts well beyond Valentine’s Day.

"Placing emphasis on shared interests is a great approach to establishing relationships—platonic or romantic," says Matt Muro, founder of lifeknot. "It gives you an immediate indication of your compatibility , and there’s an assurance that such a connection is more than skin deep." A shared passion for glassblowing, gardening, gliders, and world travel may mean one has found his or her soul mate or simply someone with whom to visit Paris. Either way, to quote Humphrey Bogart's character, Rick, in Casablanca, it could be "the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

According to Muro, "shared interests ensure love found at Valentine’s Day, or any day of the year, is more destiny than chance."

Activities Abound

lifeknot currently lists over 1,200 member-suggested activities across 45 categories. Members are constantly suggesting new and interesting activites as they seek people that share their interests. More often than not, I need to consult Wikipedia (one of my favorite sites) to learn about the new activity suggestion.

Some particularly interesting recent activity additions include:

Spirituality: Ásatrú
"Ásatrú (Icelandic "Æsir faith") is a new religious movement whose focus is reviving the Norse paganism of the Viking Age - as described in the Eddas - prior to the arrival of Christianity." - Wikipedia

Winter Sports: Skijoring
"Skijoring is a winter dog- or horse-powered sport popularized in North America and derived from the Scandinavian sport of pulka. It involves a horse or from one to three dogs hitched directly to a human being on skis." - Wikipedia

Science: Ethology
"Ethology is the scientific study of animal behavior considered as a branch of zoology. The desire to understand the animal world has made ethology a rapidly growing field, and even since the turn of the 21st century, many prior understandings related to diverse fields such as animal communication, personal symbolic name use, animal emotions, animal culture and learning, and even sexual conduct, long thought to be well understood, have been revolutionized, as have new fields such as neuroethology." - Wikipedia
